Fleet Street legend Brian Hitchen and his wife Nelli were crossing a road Sunday to meet friends at a restaurant in the resort town of Altea when they were struck by a car.

Nelli Hitchen was pronounced dead at the scene. Her 77-year-old husband was rushed to a hospital where he died of his injuries after surgery — and after being placed in a medically-induced coma.
